Woodland Management
Woodlands provide many environmental, social, and economic benefits. Currently in Ireland woodland is limited to a patchwork of small wooded sites interconnected by hedgerows, tree lined river systems, and tree lined roads. The restricted use of land for woodland results in a very fragile woodland network.
Tree Space can evaluate woodland sites and provide management recommendations aimed at conserving, restoring, and expanding woodland structure. The boundaries of the site can be established and outlined on a map or aerial photograph. We can assess species composition, age structure, and other key woodland characteristics. Potential threats can be identified, and mitigation strategies put in place. All information collected in the field can be presented in a management plan. The management plan can provide a strategy for the landowner to reach their objectives and ensure the sustainable development of the woodland.
Tree-space can provide the following Woodland Management services:
Woodland Inventory
Woodland Mapping
Ancient & Veteran Tree Inventory
Woodland Management Plans
Closer-to-nature Woodland Management
New Woodland Creation Projects
Irelands National Forestry Strategy was launched by the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine (DAFM) in 2023. The primary objective of the forestry strategy is to ‘expand the national forest estate on both public and private lands in a manner that will deliver lasting benefits for climate change, biodiversity, water quality, wood production, economic development, employment and quality of life’. To assist landowners with woodland projects the Forestry Division of DAFM provide financial supports to create new woodlands or manage existing woodlands.
Tree-space intends to assist private or public landowners who wish to create new woodlands under the new forestry programme 2023 - 2027. The opportunities and constraints of potential planting sites can be evaluated. The application and establishment process will be facilitated from the pre-approval stage (Form 1) to successful establishment (Form 3). All projects will be completed in accordance with the Forest Service Forestry Standards Manual and the Environmental Requirements for Afforestation.
