TU Dublin Academic Hub - Grangegorman

Tree-space has just recently been appointed to plan the tree protection measures for the new academic hub at Grangegorman campus, Dublin 7. The trees on the site are of great significance and are considered protected by the Grangegorman Development Agency.

Demolition and construction works associated with the new development have the potential to negatively impact on any retained trees. Tree-space will design a protection plan in accordance with the British Standard BS 5837 to ensure that the trees are retained successfully, and the tree protection measures do not conflict with the construction process.

Tree protection measures designed by Tree-space and installed by the main contractor are in place for the new TU Dublin Academic Hub project.

One of the key features of the development plan was the installation of a temporary haul road for the construction phase. The alignment of the temporary haul road was in conflict with the root protection areas of the retained trees. Tree-space specified a cellular confinement system as a solution for the haul road construction. Cellular confinement systems laterally confine the sub-base materials into three-dimensional interconnected cells, reducing compaction and maintaining the soil bulk density at levels suitable for tree root growth. Heavy construction traffic has already passed over the temporary haul road. It will be interesting to investigate soil compaction levels at the end of the project.
